Built in 1701 by Robert Clarkson & Sons, the house eventually falls into the hands of a miserly moneylender named Mr Scrooge. In 1843, the ground floor is occupied by Percy and Louise Radcliffe, a newly married couple struggling to make ends meet with their modest funeral business. Their descendants continue to inhabit and run the same business in 1892, during the terrifying nights of the Blitz in 1940, and finally in 2009, when eight diverse and solitary tenants occupy the now converted flats.

Each part of the novel takes place on Christmas Day. But what connects these lives across the decades? Is it mere coincidence that these residents experience moments of strange good fortune—or is something more mysterious at work? Could their unexpected blessings be linked to the events of one ghostly Christmas morning long ago?
