Gloria had learned to measure her steps without losing her stride. Power required that. The higher she climbed, the narrower the path became.

Bill watched the currents shift the way he watched open water — subtle at first, then undeniable. He trusted instinct more than commentary. And his instinct told him something was coming.

Missy, as always, saw it first. Not in the polls. Not in the press. But in the way conversations changed tone. In the way certain smiles no longer reached the eyes.

The House Next Door had once been a secret. Then it became a rumor. Then a story.

Now it was something else.

A symbol.

To some, it represented everything wrong with power.
To others, it represented everything honest about love.

Inside its walls, nothing had changed. The laughter was real. The arguments were real. The loyalty was real.

But outside those walls, patience was thinning.
