When her marriage is shattered by her cheating husband, Jody and her children leave the lovely house she designed and decorated to start a new life in California with family and old friends. Bill and his mistress, Cynthia move into the house, intending to make it their own. However, that is when the house suddenly develops problems with plumbing, electric appliances, doors and locks. Coping with daily unexplained issues makes Cynthia think this dream house is haunted. Then, the web of carefully woven lies covering her past sins begins to unravel. While Jody is finding romance and a new life in her new home, Cynthia is struggling with fear and frustration in her union with Bill and his nightmare of a house. Men with mob connections are after a mysterious package Cynthia is holding for a friend. She accepts a large amount of cash for the package, then runs off with it and its multi-million dollar contents, leaving a dead body in the house for Bill to find when he returns from visiting his children. Bill is suspected of murdering the missing Cynthia, as well as the dead woman in his house. Cynthia and the package travel to a gorgeous villa in Italy, where more mystery, suspense, and complications involving a former movie star, the package, an artist, a mobster, the Vatican Police, and the Pope bring about a surprising and satisfying ending.
