This audiobook was a good story with a good performance. It would have been a better story if it had more substance, i.e. plot background and more depth to the characters. The performance contributed positively to the listening experience.

Good listen

This was a very good children's/young adult story of the sole survivor of a witchhunt. Elvira did nothing wrong, meant no harm, and helped her community, but her power scared people who valued power, because it eclipsed their own. They had also learned nothing from history, in which this exact scenario had occurred, and--because they KNEW it was shameful--they were threatened by the truth.
This story has happened over and over in the annals of history. Power attracts bullies, and bullies hoard their power and do not like perceived threats to it. PERCEIVED threats, not necessarily actual ones. Not only that, they concoct narratives to shore up their self-righteousness and hide their shame.
And it was Elvira's truth, personal power, and the power of her great ally, that won the day--an ally who tested her for trustworthiness and consented to trust her.
I think the message here is that the truth alone may not be enough to set you free; you may still need a Big Stick, and courageous and trustworthy allies, because--your actual behavior or intentions aside--the fearful among the reigning powerful will still take a swing at you and they will call it Justice to paint themselves as righteous.

Fear makes people do terrible things to each other

The House of Eldritch: Omnibus Edition is pure magic from start to finish! Margate weaves a world that brims with wonder, mystery, and a touch of danger, while Allender's narration brings each character to life with charm and flair. Elvira’s journey from unexpected apprentice to a potential legend kept me hooked, and I couldn’t stop smiling at every twist!

A world that brims with wonder!
