It is about timeless characters caught in a distinctly modern world. Written with an ear for the cadences of Cape Breton and a profound understanding of the many emotional shadings that exist between the sexes, The Ice Bridge is another superb work from D.R. MacDonald.

This was a terrific novel. The eerie atmosphere of a Cape Breton winter and the haunting scene at the beginning of the story are like a translucent curtain through which we see the story of Anna's exile from California and watch her bump up against the local islanders like a boat in the fog. Hecht's narration fits the brooding atmosphere perfectly. Please, audible, more MacDonald and Hecht!
