The Inventor

Alberto Erimos, a humble and reclusive inventor, tinkers away as he designs "helper bots," the most advanced artificial creations the world has ever seen...except the world hasn't seen it, because they're not for sale, not for show, and certainly not for use by the military industrial complex. But when a neighboring country is overtaken by a power-hungry dictator, Alberto discovers his designs are being used to mechanize the warlord's army. All his plans for a quiet life, a legacy of creation, and a quiet hope for love are upended, forcing the inventor to confront the world outside his secluded cottage home, and face the consequences of his years of labor.

The Inventor is a small, personal, science-fiction story, set in the backdrop of war, political intrigue, and the criminal underbelly of society, seeking to explore the ideas that make us human, and set us apart, not only from the primitive life around us, but the artificial life that is still ahead of us.
