Astrid, a naïve teenage girl, marries Philip, her prince charming who loves and praises her yet later abuses and tries to break her. However, fate then steps in and reveals the lie that gives her strength and the wings to fly, ultimately freeing her from the grip of despair from a marriage steep in ill repair.

In the aftermath of her tumultuous marriage and the divorce that follows, Astrid is left unsure of her identity and confused about relationships and her own sexuality. While her exterior is perfectly picturesque, with beauty, intelligence, and a successful career, her interior is severely flawed beyond her awareness. Thus begins her compelling journey of personal growth and self-discovery.

In her efforts to transcend her life, she vows to never love, play the victim, or be powerless in relationships again. She liberally sheds her innocence and engages in pleasures from all facets of relationships. It's during these exploits that she unwittingly falls in love with Joey. Their relationship is fiery, passionate, sexually explosive, and all-encompassing of everything she desires in a man, but then it unravels and implodes, leaving her in a deep, dark emotional abyss. But just when she thinks her life is over, she emerges as the Kokuran and discovers the essence of who she is - mysterious, beautiful, audacious, and powerful.
