Compared favorably to Dan Brown's novels, Sam Bourne's The Last Testament takes aim at a conflict that's endured since Biblical times. In Jerusalem, the shooting of an innocent man sets off a chain of killings that threatens to derail a historic deal between the Israelis and Palestinians. Maggie Costello is called in to negotiate the peace, but soon realizes the string of murders is targeting the expert archaeologists who are her only hope of unraveling a long-hidden secret in the Bible.©2007 Jonathan Freedland (P)2009 Recorded Books, LLC Middle East Suspense Mystery Thriller & Suspense

Critic reviews

"More readable than The Da Vinci Code - the sense of menace is darker and the characters more believable." ( Esquire)

Even though it has a slow start, it moves along. All of the sudden it picks up speed and it is not until the end that you stop running. It sometimes is highly descriptive of the scene making it loose it's speed. Too many characters, but necessary in order to unfold the plot. Very captivating and enjoyable "read". I found the ending unfinished as you do not know what the opinions are from the main characters as to the message, making it cofusing. All in all it is an enetertainig book giving you a lesson in History, Archeology and Human Nature, showing all the minuscia of the up-bringing of all humanity and the biased thinking ingrained in our lives. Good Lesson.

Intriguing

It was not as exciting or fast pasted. I did not like it much.

This was not the Da Vinci Code

Overall I am huge fan of historical fiction. This book had all of what I like but also some areas that made me think how silly. (Hiding something in Second Life). Overall entertaining but nothing too original in terms of how it flows.

Still not sure how I feel...

Hard to keep track of names and who was who - especially if listened to sporadically. Good update on Middle East and helped personalize what is going on.

An OK book
