The death-defying conclusion to the "audacious," "razor-sharp," and "raucous" exploits of the notorious outlaws Scarlett and Browne from the bestselling author of Lockwood & Co., Jonathan Stroud.

Throughout their lawless careers, Scarlett McCain and Albert Browne have gotten out of trouble by shooting first, then running away. Now that's no longer an option.

In this non-stop thrill-ride of a novel, we witness Albert’s return to the terrifying Stonemoor prison, follow Scarlett’s search for her long-lost brother, see a town besieged by the cannibal Tainted, and join the final confrontation against the cruel forces of the Faith Houses.

Along the way, our rebellious anti-heros will have to face up to the secrets of their past, and accept the challenge of shaping a better future.

Critic reviews

"Even within the pressure of action, description, and bringing many threads together, Stroud’s vivacity of phrasing has lost none of its verve." —The Horn Book

Jonathan Stroud is great at building alternate universes that are both familiar and strange. I adore Bartimaeus (read and listened three times) and quite liked Lockhart and Co. - the characters kept me interested here as well except... the evil doers are people who value history and archeology in this one, and seem to be sincere in their beliefs that they are trying to save the world. The other series' bad guys are those who want to control others and/ or live forever at others' expense so it was satisfying to destroy them all... but although the bad guys in this series don't value the lives of others... their aims aren't as vile.
The idea that history doesn't matter is an uneasy one for me to swallow. It doesn't ring true.
I don't think this is a "read again" series.
Writing, as usual, is impeccable and imaginative in a way that only Brits can pull off.

Excellent storytelling- disturbing theme

loved the characters and world, great story. a little on the dark side sometimes, and the bad guys were caricatures, but I couldn't stop listening anyway.
