The bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America

In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction—to the City of New York.

Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles's third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes.

You'll want to take this one on the road
I'm a huge fan of Amor Towles, so a new release from him is always an unexpected pleasure. I say ''unexpected'' not because I'm surprised it's good, but because everything he writes is entirely unique. His debut followed a year in the life of a young woman in New York City, and his second novel explored the entire adult life of a Russian count on house arrest. With his third, Towles branches out into multi-perspective with an Americana-soaked work of historical fiction that is both an ode to the Homeric epics and a buddy-road-trip narrative that's been flipped on its head. The shifting vantage points and propulsive motion of the story make for a rich listening experience, with a world beating multi-cast. Clever, moving, at times tragic, and always, always insightful, The Lincoln Highway is a joy of a listen. —Emily C., Audible Editor

It took me more than a month to finish A Gentleman In Moscow. I finished this book in 2 days. AGIM was just....so slow for 2/3 of the book. By the time I was done, I had it on 2.8 speed to hurry the book along. However, with The Lincoln Highway, I was surprised when it was over. I'm aware that I'm totally opposite of most reviewers, but this was much better and interesting than A Gentleman In Moscow
I enjoyed the multiple narrators and POVs. Like I say, I finished this book in 2 days. I just...found it interesting. I know I'm in the minority, but it's OK..

I'm totally opposite

Incredible Characters!

What a gem of a book. The story is a tangled mesh of strange twists and beautifully concealed surprises. Now and then I’d find a deeper and very subtle metaphorical meaning to some of the action that couldn’t have been there by accident. And that would cue me to spot the same thing happening over and over again throughout the whole book. There is a second and possibly a third layer underneath the storyline and it was great fun savoring this book.

Strangely touching

The story is great but made even better by the incredible job the narrators did. I absolutely love Amor Towles’ use of language. I highly recommend this book.

This is the best narration I have ever listened to.
