A horror story inspired by real events

A group of boyhood friends in the summer of 1977. An annual rite of passage in a dark and alluring Pennsylvania wood. The channeling of a malevolent Presence.

And a childhood game about to go terribly wrong....

Two brothers in the summer of 1995, reunited by the unspeakable nightmare of their past. A bewitching tavern proprietress and psychic intuitive from New Orleans. The revelation of an apocryphal prophesy.

And a harrowing return to the woods haunted by something far more dangerous than a memory....

Contains mature themes.

I downloaded this as a free book with only a slight hope it would be entertaining. I did not have high hopes. Boy was I surprised! This book was really good! I was enthralled and looked forward to my commute to and from work. So glad I came across this gem.

I really loved this book and can't wait for part 2. There are a lot of different reviews regarding how the author jumps from different time lines and how it's hard to follow but it really plays off the present and past timelines very well In my opinion. So the story line is not straightforward so you do have to have patience and pay attention, but it is well worth it, especially when they bring in the the spiritual woman from New Orleans and from there it gets really good. This is definitely one of the books that makes you want to jump right into the 2nd book because the plot is not obvious and the villain is not obvious so I'm definitely looking forward for book 2.

And of course Joe Hemple is a master at narrating.

Unexpected Storyline

I found myself driven to finish this read. It has been a long time since I so enjoyed a horror novel. I've read many, that I was ho hum about, and never written a review. This was so good, here I am recommending it to others. The story was cohesive and tied up many questions I had. It was scary, and reminiscent of Kings "It", and "The omen", in some ways, but grew into its own as it progressed.
I thought the narrator excellent, and hope he continues as the series moves forward.

Really good story and narration

Every chapter left you ready to start the next.
Definitely didn't see the ending coming!

couldn't put it down.

Solid performance although I think narrator could use some work on his accents. Story was good and suspenseful but I had to restart chapters multiple times because I had zoned out. Pacing during suspenseful/scary moments was so slow that huge story events could happen and I had already zoned out because it felt like it dragged. Part of it is my adhd so I can’t knock them severely over it, but it’s enough for me to not seek out the sequel.

If you have trouble keeping track of time jumps this isn’t really the story for you. Only 2 timelines and each chapter tells you what timeline we’re in, but still.

Good but didn’t hold my attention
