Sarah Hodges has one rule for survival: make yourself useful, or get discarded. She just needs one final, highly illegal harvest of rare bioluminescent flora from Sector 4 to pay off her debts and buy her permanent independence. Trapped together in the sweltering cavern for three days, their psychological armor begins to fracture. Sarah frantically tries to prove her usefulness by decoding a corporate cipher-drive that could buy Tarn his permanent freedom. Tarn fights a losing, agonizing war against his own localized biology—a suppressed failsafe triggered by the storm that demands he claim the chaotic, resilient human as his mate.

But the corporation hasn't forgotten their missing weapon. When a hard-coded trap in the cipher-drive summons a heavily armed retrieval strike team to their door, Tarn and Sarah must decide what they are willing to sacrifice: their hard-won isolation, their carefully constructed defenses, or each other.
