A decades-old murder. A blood-thirsty cult. A house full of spirits.

Scarlett DeHaven leaves Nashville behind for a new beginning in the Shenandoah Valley without memories of drug addiction and rehab. But after purchasing an abandoned house with a disturbing past in the hopes of transforming it into a luxury bed-and-breakfast, she experiences visions and voices.

Strangers appear, bearing cryptic warnings. And a tunnel is discovered underneath the house - one that was historically used for a local cult’s rituals.

It doesn’t take long for Scarlett to realize she is being targeted by violent spirits. Driven to the edge of despair, she vows to fight back, but she has no idea what she’s really battling. And her nightmare is just beginning.

From the author of Wildfell comes a gripping supernatural thriller in which the monsters may be vampires, demons, or flesh and blood. It is a nightmare that will make you believe it could easily happen to you.

On recommendation from my wife, I listened to this book. The first chapter was very cliche, and the performer was reading in a choppy style. I almost stopped. But don’t!! Once you get to chapter 3 the story begins to draw you in with that urge that you just don’t want to stop until the mystery is ferreted out. Ms DeVault’s performance gets better as the interaction between characters becomes deeper and the authors descriptions become more atmospheric.
By the end I had almost forgotten the rough start to the story, and will probably purchase and listen to Ms Clarke’s new story Wildfell.
Overall, it was a satisfying experience, and I would recommend you read this story.

Engaging story, with great atmosphere!

I thought this book had some promise but I really couldn't take the narrator's voice and the accent she used for a British person was an Australian accent and I only got through chapter 7 cuz it just dragged on too long

Did not like the narrator

Looked at this title twice before committing to purchase, the reviews made me hesitate. I'm glad I made the purchase. The story is good, a few things that could have been expanded on, but did not deter much form the main story. The narration gets better as the story goes on, the beginning does sound very tinny and I could have swore it echoed in a few places, but somehow it does bring a certain ambiance to the story. Overall I believe it was a good story, something that could keep you up at night!

Good story overall

I wasn’t sure given the mixed reviews. But I really enjoyed the story and the narrative.

Shockingly good

The story was good and entertaining with mysteries and twists. The narrator was good except when she narrated men. There were inconsistent and unrecognizable accents that were distracting but overall, not bad enough to detract from the story so I still recommend.
