Harry Emerson Fosdick (1878-1969) was an American pastor and a central figure in the Fundamentalist - Modernist controversy within American Protestantism in the 1920s and 1930s.
Bringing to light a variety of insights into the significance and practice of prayer, "The Meaning of Prayer" (1915) examines various methods of learning how to pray and to understand prayer, from the personal to the universal. In discussing the various aspects of prayer, Fosdick draws on scriptural examples and expositions, and the prayers of many believers of the past. Chapter headings include "The Naturalness of Prayer", "Prayer and the Goodness of God", "Hindrances and Difficulties", "Unanswered Prayer", "Prayer as Dominant Desire", and "The Unselfishness of Prayer".
