The Gothic style cathedral originated in Northern France in the first half of the 12th century. A new dynasty of French kings, the Capetians, had subdued the feudal lords to become rulers in France, with their capital in Paris. The Capetian kings wished to build new cathedrals as monuments of their power, wealth, and religious faith.
"The Medieval Cathedrals" is an excerpt from The History of Medieval Europe by Lynn Thorndike.
