A young Black boy is abandoned by his mother and initially raised by a caring woman, who is not related to him, along with two groups of Black women: Catholic nuns and prostitutes in Washington, D.C. He credits these groups for their joint efforts in preventing his life from being plagued by negative outcomes. His life takes a drastic turn when he experiences a new living arrangement following adoption.

Evolving from a gang member to ultimately becoming a university president, he pays homage to the women in his life who nurtured his successful journey. His story captures the interplay between Black and White cultures as he struggles to find meaning throughout his life.
