With money and hope in short supply, newly minted attorney Brigham Theodore decides it’s time to lower his standards. He joins a seedy fly-by-night firm in Salt Lake City out of desperation. After he loses his first case - a speeding ticket - he’s convinced his career is over. But to his shock, his boss hands him a slightly more complex case: capital murder.

Brigham’s new client is Amanda Pierce, a lost, exhausted woman who gunned down the man who tortured and killed her six-year-old daughter. A jury may prove sympathetic to her unbearable pain, but the law is no fan of vigilante justice - and neither is Vince Dale, the slick and powerful prosecutor who’s never lost a murder case. There’s no question that Amanda pulled the trigger - she did it in front of five witnesses. If she pleads guilty, she will avoid a death sentence, but saving her life this way comes with an admission that what she did was wrong. However, if she refuses the “guilty” label, Brigham will have no choice but to fight for his career - and Amanda’s life.

I worked with the court system for 15 years and it is terrifying. Between judges having absolute power (which corrupts absolutely) who play golf with the lawyers in the old boy's club; and people who need to exercise power over others who are drawn to police and military positions; and the jury selection method (not our peers); and not looking at facts but at past case decisions; and the number of people found lately who have served years in prison when innocent..... it is really a crap shoot. I don't believe it would end the same way in real life.

Justice - an illusion

OMG! I loved this book.

First of all, anyone that has ANYTHING to do with the legal system IN REAL LIFE should never read any kind of legal book because sure as heck they’re going to tear the book apart. Just like they did this one in a lot of the reviews on Goodreads and Amazon.

Personally, I loved it. I went into it knowing it’s wasn’t real life; it wasn’t today’s front page story. It’s just a story taken out of someone’s imagination a put in book form. It doesn’t matter that the author is a lawyer someone is still going to pick it apart because of silly little things.

I loved Brigham and Molly and I’m glad they became a couple. I liked Tommy and Scotty, too. But mostly I liked the defendant, Amanda Pierce. She was so awesome and so pathetic at the same time and after hearing what that monster did to her 6 year old daughter I could see why she did what she did. I hated Vince because he was an arrogant jerk. And I love, love, loved the judge.

I have no idea if what was said in the court room was right or wrong but for ME it was right. I don’t have to know about how courtroom proceedings are supposed to be to know what I like.

However, I don’t think I’ll be reading the next book because of the complaints I heard about it having “the worst ending ever.” LOL, once someone writes that I’m sure not interested in it.

There was a slight romance in here but no sex of any kind. The F-bomb was used 10 times.

As to the narration: Nick Podehl did a fantastic job! On the female voices and the emotions. His male voices are always phenomenal.

Great book and awesome narration..

A harrowing event, however the writing is a complete pleasure absent belaboring fluff. Will search out other listens by Methos.

Very nice listen
