Sad but deep. Definitely worth a listen especially if you have an interest in history.

A Moving Story

Remarque has a talent for conveying a wide breadth of emotions and describing incredible scenes. I found this particular story thrilling and moving because of the troubles with war and fear and love and loss and hope and every human emotion. War is hell.

Kirby Heyborne gives an incredible performance in this reading, making the characters believable and lively.

A heartwrenching nailbiter WW2 perspective!

This is a bold but apt title...read it and you will see how little we understand when we are forced to survive on the run with little to eat, crossing borders, robbery or pointed out or shunned by your own fellow runners. ,foreign language and customs lack of a safe place to sleep and worry about family and friends. He wrestles with the fear of losing his mind and dying without anyone to understand. that the name he uses now is not his own name anymore. He mainly visits refugee hangouts at NIGHT to hear news from others like himself in an effort to stay safe. LISBON is where a boat to America sits... One night as he visits the docks, as he peeks out of the shadows he sees a man...they go through their own rituals of confirmation because it is a perilous risky business. He eventually meets another man at a Café...this is where the story begins for both of these men - the Reich man, and the Runner.
I am riveted by the Narrator as he grabs my attention and pulled me in...

Remarkable

I became interested in this author after his well known “all quiet on the western front“. His writing is skilled, nuanced, and both plot and narrative are subtle and compelling. Very highly recommended to anyone who enjoys period fiction from 1938 to 1945.

Great WW2 story about the very short time before the real war started. A reminder of what happened and could again.
