In this chapter from Lynn Thorndike's The History of Medieval Europe, the most destructive and dangerous threat to Western Christendom seemed to be the invaders from the north, the Vikings, who came by sea in their swift, long boats which could penetrate far up the rivers. The Northmen from the Scandinavian peninsula repeatedly ravaged Europe but only established a permanent kingdom in the west in Normandy. Toward the end of the ninth century the nomadic Magyars entered the plain of Hungary, swept over Bavaria, Saxony, Thuringia and Franconia and frequently ravaged Lombardy. They soon settled down and became incorporated into Christian Europe.
