The Pearl Diver is the story of a young woman named Elsie. She lives on Caelum, one of six known habituated planets (or seven, depending on who you ask). The missionaries say that all sentient life has descended from the same root species, diverging to adapt to life on each planet. Caelumans have rudimentary gills, which enable them to breathe underwater for limited stretches of time.

Each year, an official from the system's head planet, Dunamis, visits Caelum to host the dive. A single black pearl is dropped into a section of the ocean, and contestants from the graduating year compete to find it. The winner is crowned the Pearl Diver and allowed to travel to Dunamis, where a better life awaits.

Elsie longs to win, her competitive streak runs deep, but there is much in her way. She's haunted by the memory of her brother, who drowned in the dive five years earlier. Her parents are overbearing, not wanting to see the same grim outcome repeated.

With her jaw clenched and her gills open, Elsie must fight for her dreams.

She will become the Pearl Diver or die trying.

This story is in need of a sequel. The narrator captured the characters so well there needs to be more. While listening it was almost uncanny how each character had a life of their own. I could hear all their thoughts and feel all their emotions. A masterful narration.
