Great characters and performance

Dickens' characters are always memorable, and I will think about Samuel Pickwick for a long time. The loosely connected vignettes with the usual misdirection the author is known for make this a fun read, if sometimes overwritten.

I have read 5 novels written by Charles Dickens, but this story is different in purpose and structure. Possibly the fact that the chapters were written in serial form influenced Dickens’s approach of almost singular episodes. However, as the stories continue, the characters become more familiar.
Since some episodes have a purpose of satire, farse, or visible social criticism, the reader has descriptions of English debtors prison ships, as well as critical comments on English lawyers. Thankfully, as the novel progresses, more characterizations become evident.

“Escape reading” for the 21st century, this novel is not. But for those serious readers of historical fiction, this “classic”novel might be a choice.
The narrator does a superb job!

Fabulous narration held my interest

It’s a good book with lots of different people and situations and the narrator captured each one. Entertaining, interesting and enlightening. And if you don’t care for some part, speed through to the next bit because there are hidden gems throughout.

My absolute favorite

I absolutely love this book! It is my favorite Dickens so far. It is a fun, heartfelt story with lovable characters that I have read over and over, and will listen to if I want something comforting to read. I also make a point of trying to listen to everything that Simon Vance has narrated. In this book, I feel he outdid himself. The story comes alive, and sometimes I am in disbelief that he is doing all of the voices. He really captures the personality of the characters, and I can picture their faces in my mind. I find myself laughing out loud in so many parts. I highly recommend !

Simon Vance does it again!

OK, I admit it: every new recording of The Pickwick Papers I listen to is my favorite. It's one of the weaknesses of being such a fan of audiobooks, especially audiobooks of Charles Dickens novels. In that spirit, this is my new favorite reading of The Pickwick Papers.

Simon Vance’s performance joins a handful of other excellent productions of this book available from Audible: Rory Kinnear, David Timson, and Patrick Tull have all given notable readings of the novel. Listening to Simon Vance’s version was a delight. And it was also educational, because it helped me understand what makes Vance such a reliably effective narrator. He recognizes that the “narrator” of a novel, the alleged teller of the tale, is himself a character, and in this case he imbues him with a geniality and open-heartedness that I believe Dickens himself intended his narrator to possess.

Vance gives appropriate voice to all the characters, although he is somewhat more restrained than Kinnear in this regard. Where Kinnear’s performance is studded with star turns (and I admit that sometimes that's what I'm in the mood for), Vance’s is an ensemble production where everyone is a supporting player, and what they're supporting is the graceful flow of the narrative as a whole.

Everything I've said about the novel elsewhere remains true here. It's one of my favorite of Dickens’ novels, certainly his funniest, yet even here at the very beginning of his career he's able to get the knife in and force us to confront the gross injustices of the British economic and judicial system. Dickens was terrible to his family, but he was a great writer, and his words have made the world a better place.
