Dreams are the most misunderstood necessity of life. The needs for shelter, food, water, and air are all clearly recognized and valued, but the immeasurable importance of dreams is too often overlooked. However, without dreams our species would not survive. Over the vast millennia of human development, nature has perfected the “ideal survival paradigm”: dreaming. Hence, it is imperative to recognize the importance of dreams and to understand how they function to affect the physical, mental, and spiritual health of each individual as well as of the human race itself. For ironically, dreams “awaken” us to the truth and wholeness of our very being. To help bring to light the magic of dreams, The Power of Dreams: A History of Healing Body, Mind, and Soul examines and encompasses the separate areas of dream studies to unify as well as confirm the tripartite physical, mental, and spiritual nature of dreams from what the ancients knew to contemporary scientific discoveries because such an inclusive, multicultural, multidisciplinary approach is necessary to redress the compartmentalization in any therapeutic field of research inherently subject to overspecialization. As a result, this undertaking is a “vision quest” of sorts. Its holistic perspective, whereby the whole is revealed to be “more than the sum of its parts,” is an individual yet collective journey to truth and healing.
