When journalist Andrew Sherwood witnesses an assault on a woman, he is curious to find out more about her. Then she disappears. And, it transpires, Louise Widdows is on the run from a tyrannical husband and moves into a vacated cottage, trying to cover her tracks in case her husband tries to find her. Befriended by Andrew and his young son, Louise is drawn to the freedom so long denied, while Andrew is drawn to her by the mystery of her sudden flight and a secret he suspects she is hiding.©1999 Margaret Yorke (P)2014 Audible, Inc. Critic reviews

"It's a mystery how Yorke keeps turning out these fine, carefully constructed psychological thrillers, but readers should be glad she does." (Booklist)

I loved Yorke's Dead in the Morning but this book turns out to be a lusterless long read with lots of detail and nothing really happening. The main character is annoyingly meek and though this is fully intentional and a psychological portrait with many messages, it makes it difficult to relate to anyone through these tedious pages. What kept me going is the delirious Britishness of it all; something that makes for "comfort reading" for me.

Long dull disappointment
