When freedom finally reached the fields of the South, Isaiah Bowman learned that chains could break, but the past does not let go so easily. Born into bondage, Isaiah fights his way from the plantations of Carolina to the front lines of the Civil War, where he joins the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first regiment of formerly enslaved men to wear Union blue.

When the guns fall silent, Isaiah’s war is far from over. Haunted by the faces of those he could not save and driven by the memory of the overseers who once owned his name, he becomes a myth whispered across the Lowcountry: the Ghost of Bowman. To some, he is a murderer. To others, a deliverer. To himself, he is a man trying to balance the weight of mercy against the pull of vengeance.

Through fire, river, and redemption, Isaiah discovers that the hardest freedom to win is the one inside a man’s soul, and that the true price of memory is never paid in blood alone.
