In the second novel in Joanna Shupe’s the Uptown Girl series, a ruthless casino owner bent on revenge finds his plans upended by a beautiful woman who proves to be more determined than he is--and too irresistible to deny.

Powerful casino owner.
Ruthless mastermind.
Destroyer of men.

He lives in the shadows . . .

As the owner of the city’s most exclusive casino, Clayton Madden holds the fortunes of prominent families in the palms of his hands every night. There is one particular family he burns to ruin, however, one that has escaped his grasp . . . until now.

She is society’s darling . . .

Florence Greene is no one’s fool. She knows Clayton Madden is using her to ruin her prestigious family . . . and she’s using him right back. She plans to learn all she can from the mysterious casino owner—then open a casino of her own just for women.

With revenge on his mind, Clay agrees to mentor Florence. However, she soon proves more adept—and more alluring—than Clay bargained for. When his plans are threatened, Clay must decide if he is willing to gamble his empire on love.

As usual Ms.Shupe delivers another great book. Typically I fast forward through boring parts. However with this book, I couldn't stop listening.

captivating from beginning to end

This is quite different from the historical romances I've been reading throughout the years. Yes, we have a strong-willed, independent-thinking woman as a heroine, but her ambitious streak seems to be rooted in modern times. I am not saying this is bad; it is just that I no longer find it surprising. Regardless, I still had a good time reading this. I love how the characters' backgrounds were well thought out (I mean, Florence as middle child and her out-of-the-box quirkiness? Count me in!). It gives us numerous reasons to understand who they are. We rarely see this kind of character sketch.

All in all, this series was fun. I will surely read the other two in the near future.

A very modern historical romance

Very predictable, written for someone with a 3rd grade reading comprehension but the labido of a 17 y/o boy.

Run of the mill

I love Joanna Shupe novels, but this was a real struggle to get through. It has no plot. The rich girl meets casino owner with attraction. There is so little here, I don't even have words to give a review.

Plot is disastrously tedious.
