Editorial reviews

Hamlin Garland, as well as any American author could, tells of the hardships and toil of farming communities in the rural Midwest and his story The Return of a Private is a prime example of just how harsh that life can be. With a pitch-perfect performance from Donald White, the gravity of Private Edward Smith's journey home becomes fully realized. Initially, Private Smith and his company are more or less in high spirits as they make their return home from the Civil War, but as Smith draws nearer to the farm and his family, reality begins to set in. The respite from struggle, he quickly and sadly realizes, will be very short lived.
