The Zanj were African slaves forced to work in the lands of the south of Iraq. When they rebelled, they were joined by the slaves of the cities and nearby villages. It also profited to the support of some Arabic tribes of the area. Their chief, Alī ibn Muḥammad, was a man who became aware of his misery and promised to them grounds and richnesses. He managed to involve them in an uprising in 869, by using a strategy of violence against his opponents. Al-Muwaffaq, brother and heir of the caliph, Al-Mutamid, could to mobilize the army and began a series of military actions which gave him the victory over the rebels Zanj in 883.
