In a disintegrating and lawless near-future, a young man journeys north to a mysterious island owned by one of the world’s wealthiest men—and finds an entire new civilization waiting for him.

Ben is a painter from the crowded, turbulent city. For six months his fiancée, Cara, has been working on the remote island of Sanctuary Rock, the private estate of millionaire philanthropist Sir John Pemberley. Now she has decided to break off their engagement and stay there for good.

Ben travels to the island to try and win Cara back. After an arduous journey, he finds himself compelled to stay. But as Ben begins to traverse Pemberley’s kingdom, he begins to uncover the truth of the apparently perfect society the enigmatic Sir John is building. Is Sanctuary Rock truly a second Eden, as he claims—or a previously undiscovered level of hell?

Very interesting story! As a fan of No Such Thing As a Fish, I wanted to hear more from the elves(fish?). This was the first fiction book I’ve read in a while and it was really fun!

Great story!

I couldn't get into this book the first couple of chapters. It was unnecessarily mundane. But as the story progressed, The Sanctuary turned into a pretty captivating story of a cult-like leader trying to "save the world". The ending was unexpected. Overall, this book made my errands so much more entertaining.

Slow Start but Great Finish

The narrator is a bit overly obsessed with his girlfriend in the first few chapters, but then his obsessive nature cathects onto a different object, namely the Charismatic Leader, at which point this reader was like, aaah! Go back to the safer obsession! And the book drummed on more and more dramatically and ultimately I was very happy with the story, even considering I read this while experiencing major PMDD. Also super creepy ending, just classy and great.

Dystopian reality, alternate bad reality but super fun!!!
