Albert Camus
The Stranger, also titled The Outsider, is an acclaimed novella by the French author, journalist, and philosopher Albert Camus (1913-1960). Published in 1946, the book tells of a disaffected young man, Meursault, getting involved in petty crime which leads to murder and a trial. The themes include alienation, the fear of anonymity, and the lack of meaning. Behind the simple plot of The Stranger lies a world of metaphor. It has been adapted for film in 1967 and 2001, in song by The Cure (1979) and Tuxedomoon (2001), and a type of literary tribute, The Meursault Investigation (2015) by Kamel Daoud, which looks at the narrative of The Stranger from a different perspective.
