Thebes is in famine. The weak are starving. Soon even the strong may join them. A daughter of Clan Waterfowl is dead. The cause is unknown. Was it something that she ate? Mahu suspects poison, but he has never experienced a poison which leaves no caustic mark, no color change, no residual smell, no warning taste. With his lordly master elsewhere, Mahu begins to follow his clues, which takes him to the temple of Osiris, god of agriculture. Set in ancient Egypt, in the years just prior to the reign of King Thut, the story's hero uses a combination of intuition and rudimentary forensic evidence to solve these mysteries. All the while, he stimulates his own thought process or intimidates his suspects with the tool of a tarot deck. The fourth in a series, The Tarot Card Detective, continues a portrayal of police work in the late bronze age. While each of the Mahu stories can stand alone, they are best appreciated when read in order. If you haven’t yet met our jovial, yet sharp-witted detective, we recommend starting at the beginning, with “Sleuth of the Nile”, or the short story “The Viper’s Den”.
