Anna-Marie needs to escape before her aunt arranges her marriage to a high society gentleman. She's lived a sheltered life but she's ready for adventure. Better a husband of her own choosing than one Aunt Mildred bullies into proposing. Too bad she doesn't have any suitors lining up to offer her their hands. Her cousin is the flirtatious one while she prefers the company of books. Signing up to be a mail order bride is a risk that could end up being a disaster, but she's done letting someone else control her life.

Henry is ready to retire. Men his age have homes filled with children and wives who warm their beds every night. Let the younger men chase after hardened criminals and sleep on the hard ground rain or shine. His back and knees have had enough. He sends a letter off to Pearl's Mail Order Brides and for six months there is no reply. Maybe he was too honest. Not many women want to hitch their wagon to a Texas Ranger, who has land but no house. Just when he's ready to give up Anna's reply arrives at the perfect time. He's on his last assignment, tracking an outlaw known as Big Red and whether the last lead turns out to be legitimate or not, he's turning in his star.

The woman is too young for him. He knows it, and she knows it. When he tries to send her back to New York she lies about her age. Amused and impressed by her attempt at fooling an officer of the law he allows himself to be brought in front of a judge to marry the only woman willing to take a chance on a wild card like him.

This gruff and jaded Texas Ranger will teach her valuable skills, like how to ride a horse, and how to make coffee that doesn't make people choke. In return his sheltered bride teaches him how to enjoy life's little adventures.

Each steamy novella in the world of Crescent Ridge has an HEA, no OWD, no cheating and can be read in an hour or two.

Love the story and the fact that so much was included in a short book. Virtual voice takes getting used to, but gets the story across.

Enjoyable story

I was pleasantly surprised by this charming little gem of a western rom-com….I liked the Texan drawl of the ranger and the crisp voice of the pert mail-order bride..
All the little twists and turns of their getting to know each other were the exspected plot lines but was retold in a charming and fresh manner. I listen to audio books as I do my daily chores and I was quite disappointed when it ended..oh, not disappointed in the story.. it ended in the expected happy ever after for the two main characters but also with a few other characters were headed for a happy ever after. I not read any stories by Jacqueline Carmine…but I’m going to see if she has wrote anything else!

The virtual voice narration wasn’t so bad! I can’t stand most virtual read stories but this was tolerable! Story was quick but don’t expect much when it’s a bot reading. Storyline was good and to the point. Could have used more build up on the love connection too but would still recommend if you’re looking for something to pass time!
