THIS IS MY STORY.

My name is Jeyne Reddermach, and I am a competitive twenty-five-year-old whose life has been defined by tragic accidents. Nearly all my family members and friends have passed away. I work with a group of posthumous surgeons, the tenotomists or corpse cutters to our critics, in a city surrounded by the sea. We curtail the rise of the vorvolakas—mysterious creatures that plague our city and rove the streets at night knocking on doors, calling out the names of residents in hopes of turning people into their own kind.

I’ve discovered attempts on my life, possibly involving the doctor I work with, my lost husband’s brother, or a man I had an affair with after my true love was lost to the sea. And like my family, I become a victim. The world I awaken in is only a shadow of what I expected. On the surface, this world is a place of grandeur, but there are alliances and divisions between houses as well as ongoing tournaments that pit families against one another.

I must uncover the mysteries of my strange city and its roaming creatures as well as understand a strange new world, or evil will claim my soul and the souls of those I love.
