When Angela Marchmont goes to Cornwall on doctor's orders she is looking forward to a nice rest and nothing more exciting than a little sea-bathing. But her plans for a quiet holiday are dashed when she is caught up in the hunt for a diamond necklace which, according to legend, has been hidden in the old smugglers' house at Poldarrow Point for over a century. Aided by the house's elderly owner, an irrepressible 12-year-old, and a handsome Scotland Yard detective, Angela soon finds herself embroiled in the most perplexing of mysteries. Who is the author of the anonymous letters? Why is someone breaking into the house at night? And is it really true that a notorious jewel thief is after the treasure too? Angela must use all her powers of deduction to solve the case and find the necklace - before someone else does.

This is really not the best of the series. Looks like the author does not know what else to think of. And the narrator is bad: pretentious and not expressive manners

A very dull book

This mystery will definitely keep your interest. Make sure you're prepared for some unexpected surprises. Thoroughly enjoyable in every way. The narrator is excellent in her character voices and accents.

Superb story and suspense!

I very much enjoyed this author's story. I very rarely give any book five stars, but this author can write. Her writing is transparent. I read so comfortably, I never once stopped and corrected construction or spelling or direction. Loved it!

So Clara Benson, an unknown author (to me, at least) wrote this series of charming little mystery-adventure stories in the 1920’s I think. Too bad she didn’t publish them at that time, because they have value.

This one is complicated—has a little something for everyone—with Angela Marchmont going to Cornwall to rest a bit after an illness, and doing anything but, as she learns the house she is staying in is close to an old smugglers house, and something of valuable supposed to still be there.

Although, as an adult, I find this a fun listen/read, I think back in the days (waaaaaay back, in the 1950’s) when I was reading Nancy Drew books, this series would have fit in with those to some extent, and I would have loved them then a lot. There is a 12 year old girl, Barbara, who plays a big role, and the writing is simple and clean enough that a young person could enjoy them. But don’t take that to think this isn’t action-packed and appropriate for adults, because it is. Recommend to anyone who enjoys the old classic mysteries.
