At first they only hear deep, rumbling roars and grunts, and higher-pitched squeals of fear – and ultimately of submission. Then, in the distance, as the swirling dust settles, they see a pride of lions - with a fresh kill. A downed beast: that’s what they have come so far to find. That’s what, however much the cost, they must claim for themselves. They understand nothing about the coming Ice Age, but they do know the rains have failed and the herds have all but disappeared. With so few animals about, hunting is no longer a matter of pitching human cunning against the greater speed of their prey. Now, they have no choice but first drive off powerful rivals, especially lions and Neanderthals - and that is much more dangerous. Many die, but still their families starve. If only there was another way. In fact, one man believes there is. A brave hunter and warrior, Dhi is also gifted with the early stirrings of the intelligence that will one day take mankind to other worlds.
