The Volunteer

Before the U.S. entered World War I, thousands of American volunteers were helping the French wounded. This novel follows Walter Brown and Margo Parker, two Americans in the American Ambulance Field Service near the front in Alsace.
"Andrew scampered out with Walter right behind him. The byre’s doors were open. They ran the cars inside and shut them off. They were running back toward the shelter of the secours when the mortar’s scream zeroed in on them. Walter never heard the explosion.
"The lantern hanging from the ceiling was the first thing that Walter was aware of. 'The light is fuzzy,” he thought. 'Why am I looking straight up at a ceiling?' 'Que se passe-t-il?' he asked out loud. 'What’s going on?'
