Love Zahra!

At its heart this is a coming-of-age story about family. The standout of this book, for me, was the older sister Zahra (who we get POV from but isn't the main character) and the way she reacted to battles and the loss of her troops, and how she commanded her troops. Due to the author's military background the dynamics felt more realistic than most books. Zahra can be very intense, she guards her feelings, and commands with great authority. I hope she continues to have a large role in the subsequent books!

Fun start to what will be an epic saga

If you love ancient and powerful gods working plots among men, then this book is for you! Waking of Storm and Flame follows the Verbrandt Royal Family as ancient powers begin to awake and reveal themselves. These characters are genuinely good and noble, and their family bonds are one of the most endearing aspects of the story!
