The War of the Worlds has been both popular and influential. It has never gone out of print. It has spawned half a dozen feature films, radio dramas, various comic book adaptations, a television series, and sequels or parallel stories by other authors. It has even influenced the work of scientists. It is one of the earliest stories that details a conflict between mankind and an alien race.

It's dated of course but it's a great story that if you don't harp on the technology you'll like it.

Toys may change but a good story will last.

As other listeners have noted, a very annoying background noise is heard throughout this book. It unfortunately is incredible distracting. Birds? Sirens? Feedback? I have no idea. Something is making it hard to listen to, though :|

What is that noise?

I would highly recommend the story, but find another copy. The recording quality on this edition is poor. There are often noises in the background, like sirens or engines, and it is easy to tell when different takes were edited together because the sound quality changes completely. Sometimes it sounds like it was recorded in a sound studio, other times in a muffled closet, and sometimes it sounds like it was recorded in a living room while the yard is being mowed outside.

The narrator did very well in spite of the sound quality. He really brought the story to life and made me fear these Martians, even after all the times I have read this book before. I love this book, and it has always been one of my favorites. I only wish that the sound quality was smoother and less distracting.

Great Story, Poor Recording Quality

Yes. Having the book read to you is a very easy way to quickly get through the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The War of the Worlds?

When the narrator and the curate were trapped in the wreckage of a house.

What about Peter Batchelor’s performance did you like?

The emotion in his voice during exciting parts of the book.

Any additional comments?

We ordered this audible book to assist our son with his reading assignment. He was able to read the physical book while listening to the story word for word being read to him. His comprehension was greatly improved. We used this as a tool for our son and it worked. He aced his oral presentation and book report. He was able to listen to this extraordinary story being read to him and it helped him appreciate the book. This was also a way to get my son to sit down and get through the book/audio in record time. He has never been able to get his reading assignment done that quickly and enjoy it at the same time. As a parent I would highly reccomend trying this technique.

A moving read
