The Whispering in the Basement

Some houses are never empty.

When journalist Ben Mears buys the old Fallon place in Samford, Maine, he is looking for a quiet escape from his own shattered past. Instead, he finds a silent Victorian with a history that breathes. The first night, he hears it a wet, tuneless whistle drifting up from the locked basement. A sound of someone, or something, working in the dark.

The house holds its secrets in a sugar bowl key, in the frantic scratches around a locked door, and in the strange mound of lost things in the dirt below. The town elders know more than they say, speaking of a sour patch of land and a hunger that has lived there for generations.

But the whistling is getting louder. It is learning his name. And Ben soon realizes he has not just bought a house he has become the next chapter in a story that refuses to end. To survive, he must unravel a century of buried madness before the thing in the basement decides it is his turn to join the collection.
