How does a pit crew change four wheels in 1.9 seconds?

And what does that mean for a company like Blackberry?

What is Ron Dennis' secret to good time management?

And how can that help TV producers?

Why is F1 the perfect example for leadership, motivation and strategy?

And what can we learn from it?

In The Winning Formula, driver, commentator and entrepreneur David Coulthard opens the doors to the secretive world of F1 and reveals in simple, entertaining and utterly compelling terms how he has been able to master this mind-boggling variety of disciplines by applying the skills honed from his years at the top of the world's most demanding motorsport.

By recounting his own stories and combining them with firsthand experience of stellar individuals such as Lewis Hamilton, Ron Dennis, Sir Frank Williams, Christian Horner and Sebastian Vettel, Coulthard provides a fascinating fly-on-the-wall insight into F1 but at the same time offers an invaluable guide to the business of sport and the sport of business.

Not gonna lie this was hard to get through. Very repetitive and at times preachy and contradicts itself at times. Still a DC fan though.

Fan of DC but not this book

This book is a bit silly. It starts strong and outlines some good goals: F1 is a business, and a successful one, too. Me, DC – I ate F1 for breakfast, I cracked it, and I’m a successful businessman myself, so let me deconstruct this sport bit by bit and tell you how to become as successful as me. Well, great, DC, let’s go.

But very quickly, you realise that the summary of every chapter could be watered down to: “Look, I’m very successful, professional, efficient, and my work ethic is great, so you’re out of luck, I guess, get good or whatever.” It’s just comical.

Most of the "lessons" DC gives us go something like this: "So even coming out of my mother’s womb, I decided to show how efficient I am, so I sent a well-structured and laconic email to my mom and her doctors, clearly stating - without annoying and unnecessary details – when I would arrive and what complications were expected. When I popped out, I helped cut my own umbilical cord, and Jackie Stewart, who happened to walk past my mom’s ward at that exact moment, noticed that and hired me as a reserve driver."

A silly book

Maybe 20% F-1 and the rest business and self-help advice...boring at times. DC seems a great guy and had an interesting career, I expected more of his racing story and the people he interacted with during that career.

Not an F-1 Story
