America is at war with itself.

By all accounts we are the most divided we have been since the civil war. Politicians are supposed to compromise. Yet we are electing political activists who are creating a new religion of national politics, who sacralize their political beliefs. When we sacralize our political beliefs any compromise becomes a sin. It's a special type of stupid because our fragile experiment in liberal democracy is hanging in the balance.

• Western society to function as a democracy

Religiosity in the evolutionary sense motivates the modern day mind to divide the world into tribes of good and evil. Ancient religion contains wisdom solving this cognitive blind spot by getting their practitioners to recognize that the battle of good and evil wages inside every one of us. This new religion of national politics is vacant of this humble insight pitting the battle for good and evil between people and between parties. Historically these trends ended in genocide
