This classic adventure story by L. Frank Baum traces the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy in the magical Land of Oz after she and her pet dog Toto are swept away from their Kansas home by a cyclone. The Library of Congress has declared it "America's greatest and best-loved home-grown fairytale” because of its references to clear American locations like Kansas and Omaha. Translated into more than 50 languages, it has become an established part of cultures around the globe.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has seen numerous adaptations to other media like the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland. Another popular adaptation was 1978’s The Wiz, which starred Diana Ross as Dorothy and exchanged Kansas for New York City. An important theme of the novel is that each of the characters already possessed within themselves what they had thought they lacked.
