They Stood Above The Rest, an historically accurate novel begins in 1937 with three brothers in Fairfield, Iowa who’ve completed college and ROTC. Walter plans to enter the Navy and the submarine service while Thomas and Jacob plan to enter the Army air corps and become fighter pilots. Walter arrives at the Philadelphia Navy Yard to begin orientation and falls in love with Betty Ayers, daughter of a Navy Captain. He begins his orientation and evaluation cruise, while his brothers arrive at Randolph Army Airfield in Texas to begin flight training. While Walter is at sea, Betty accepts a civilian job with the Office of Naval Intelligence. Above The Rest covers the period 1937 through early 1943, the United States entering the war, and the lives, motivations and pitfalls of each of the characters. The story ranges from the United States, Territory of Hawaii, Australia, India and China, Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands and involves the fight below the sea, in the air and on the ground.
