What waits behind the doors could destroy them both.

For three years, Paige has been trapped inside the mansion—a maze of locked rooms, endless hallways, and secrets she’s too afraid to uncover. She’s learned obedience, silence, survival. But when another captive risks everything to escape, Paige feels the first spark of defiance. And once the spark is lit, the walls begin to close in.

Tessa, once a relentless detective, is drowning in grief after her husband’s sudden death. On leave from the Maddison, Indiana Sheriff’s Department, she’s barely holding herself together—until a mutilated body and a breakthrough in her sister’s disappearance force her back into the darkness she thought she’d left behind.

Two women. One imprisoned, one searching. Their paths twist toward each other inside the mansion of doors, where every locked room hides another horror—and every choice could cost them their lives.

To survive, Paige and Tessa must confront not only the evil that built the mansion, but the secrets that have been waiting for them inside all along.

Enjoy this excerpt:
Ava and I sit quietly for a while, taking comfort in each other as best we can with the wall between us. Banging starts in the hall.
“Lynn is losing it again,” Ava says.
Lynn's room is across the hall from mine. Just a few feet, but it might as well be miles.
“Let me out of here!” she screams. “You stupid monster, open this door.”
The dogs bark in response, adding to the ruckus.
At least once a day, Lynn does this, but never when he is actually nearby to hear. When he is close, the phone strapped on his hip keeps us quiet. Once, several months ago, Lynn dared to demand her freedom to his face. My door was shut, of course, but I could hear the beating she got. I'd pressed my ear against the door, willing her to be quiet so he would stop.
I had a front row seat to what sounded like the slamming of her head into her wall. I'd held my breath as I heard her scream and knew what he’d done to her.
The beating finally stopped and all I could hear was her softly crying.
“Anyone else want to try me?” he'd shouted down the hall.
No one made a sound.

Didn't think the narrator was too good. A little monotone and only one voice. No attempt to make characters sound different.

The unfolding of the story

Dawn Merriman did it again. This story has many twists and turns. It keeps your attention and keeps you guessing. However, I am beginning not to like dolls!

Intense

Did not like the Virtual Voice reader. The story is ok. But I really like listening to a real person. Will NOT be listening to another Virtual Voice book

Ai

The AI narration is terrible. Same voice tone for all characters and no inflection. The AI voice read, not only on this title, needs alot of work. Would have been 5 stars if read by a live person

Great story line

Kind of true crime-ish! She is a great author! Have listened to some of her other books!

Really good listen! Want to hear what happens in Jar of things!
