Thorndyke Novels 5-8

By R. Austin Freeman

Narrated by Graham Scott

Four more full-length adventures of R. Austen Freeman's great 'scientific investigator', Dr John Thorndyke: First, young Helen Vardon marries a man she detests in order to save her father from imprisonment; but her selfless act only precipitates a still greater disaster, and puts her under suspicion of murder. Then, in The Cat's Eye, Thorndyke unravels both an apparent robbery gone wrong and the still more complex mystery of Miss Blake's family inheritance and the cat's eye pendant. In The Mystery of Angelina Frood a woman in hiding from her drug-addled husband mysteriously vanishes into the fog. And in The Shadow of the Wolf, a husband disappears immediately after apparently sending an incriminating letter to his solicitor; but Thorndyke soon begins to question the whole chain of events.

These require some patience which may not be a bad thing. I liked the first novel less than the others but found all well written and well crafted and easy to enjoy. Recommended

An unbelievable amount of details, in these stories. Love them and I hope to read more of them.

The listener certainly gets his money's worth in this bundle, if you like English mystery novels from this period. My wife and I enjoy the Thorndike mysteries, but they may not appeal to someone who is more tuned to modern mystery novels.

My wife likes the narrator, but it took me a while to get used to his high sounding British accent. He does a fairly good job of voice acting--doing different characters and doing female voices. He makes me think that he was once a Shakespearean actor.

About 40 hours worth of English mystery novels from the 1920s.
