Der Regen rann an der grauen Mauer entlang und fiel in dicken, schweren Tropfen auf das Fenstersims, tip-tip, tip-tip, tip-tip. Der Maler in seiner Werkstatt hatte den Kopf in die Hand gestützt und schaute müde auf ein großes Bild, das vor ihm auf der Staffelei stand – es war eine graue, trübe Landschaft, ohne Farben und ohne Freude, genauso grau wie der Alltag draußen und der immer rinnende Regen an den Fenstern, tip-tip, tip-tip, tip-tip.
