Wheatgrass is probably one of the most beneficial and healthful juices that you can drink. Considering that wheat has been a staple crop in most parts of the world since biblical times, not only for bread making, but for direct consumption, such as cooked whole wheat seeds or cooked bulgur wheat, which are just cut wheat seeds to allow them to cook more easily and quicker. This is no wonder as the wheat plant has the astonishing ability to absorb almost every mineral from the soil upon which it is grown. Wheatgrass is the sprouted wheat seeds or wheat berries as they are called. The juice of the wheatgrass taste pretty much the way it looks, like you've been chewing on blades of grass from the lawn. It isn't the most palatable, so it needs to be combined with some other juice to overpower the taste, like an apple or berries. Some say it becomes an acquired taste and you get used to it and that even the organically grown wheatgrass is a little less unpalatable. Whatever the case, just combine it so it can be consumed, but don't use anything too acidic like tomatoes as they can affect some of the nutrients in the juice. And don't try to save the wheatgrass as the vitamins, minerals and other available essentials quickly start to lose their nutritional value. Only flash freezing seems to allow wheatgrass juice to retain these beneficial nutrients. As far as to how much to consume each day, start with about an ounce. The wheatgrass juice is pretty potent and one ounce will allow you to get used to it and still feel the effects. It has a pretty strong detox effect on the body. As you adapt to the taste and the effects you can work up to two and eventually even three ounces a day. A good way to do this is to just add a little wheatgrass juice to other fruit and vegetable juices that you have prepared. You will totally mask the taste but still receive the benefits. The outstanding ingredient in wheatgrass that makes it so healthful for the body is the chlorophyll. You are receiving this chlorophyll in a most viable form that will easily be assimilated by the cells of the body. The chlorophyll is the plant's form of red blood cells and our bodies quickly recognize this and are able to digest it. And as such it helps to build red blood cells in our bodies. With more red blood cells the body is able to transport more oxygen to all parts of the body, giving us more energy. The chlorophyll also alkalizes the bloodstream making the body more resistant to infections. Wheat is one of the most complete foods you can eat and wheatgrass goes one step further by allowing you to digest it quickly and absorb all the nutrients contained within and make use of them immediately. It also is one of the best cleanses for the body, removing toxins from the blood as well as the digestive organs. With wheatgrass there is no need to go on a separate detox juice diet.
