In 1885, Jessica Messing, a spirited twenty-year-old, yearns to break free from the confines of her rigid, upper-middle-class life in Hartford, Connecticut to fulfill her dreams of becoming an artist. Falling in love with her uncle’s adopted son, Jacob Stanford, only complicates her life. Her world could not be more different from his, and she envies his freedom and self-assuredness. When Jacob returns her affections, she’s swept up in a love affair she must keep hidden. Jessica’s brother Will has no interest in inheriting the family law firm and he and Jacob decide on a very different and dangerous path. Jessica's father looks to marry his daughter to a lawyer. He introduces Jessica to the charming English attorney, Frederick Moore, who has his own, self serving agenda. When Frederick takes them out West, Jessica has to make a life in a strange new world and loveless marriage. Jacob is never far from her heart but is nowhere to be found. Following her passion for art she finds ways to defy her controlling husband and one day reunite with Jacob. Can the two lovers endure their struggles and find each other again?
