In book 1, kayaker Steven Bradley discovers something unexpected in a long-abandoned fishing cabin on a remote island in Isle Royale National Park. After successfully avoiding capture by his pursuers for several gruesome days, Bradley reaches authorities and tells them what he has seen. A technical professional, Steven believes he might have seen Weapon of Mass Destruction. However, he is eventually assured that what he saw was actually a drug stash. While Federal authorities are removing Bradley from the island, Owen Anderson, on special assignment from the FBI, is alerting the US President that the country might be under attack by either a foreign nation or unknown non-state actors. The Special National Command Center begins round-the-clock staffing as an elite team is assembled from the National Nuclear Security Administration, the FBI and the CIA to deal with emergency. Rather than the hoped for quick resolution, the situation continues to grow increasingly tense as the US Intel Community discovers that multiple nuclear devices have apparently already found their way into the country. Each step forward leads to new concerns. Eventually, authorities realize they are running a race against time. Whatever organization planned the attack, they did it in such a way to make it nearly impossible to peel back all the layers of intrigue in the time remaining.
