While awaiting trial on home confinement for a double vehicular homicide that he couldn't prevent, flawed author Brendan Peters must overcome his guilt of the accident and the threat of arrest when he witnesses his new mysterious neighbor, Dean Pickett, disposing of a body. However, Brendan's curiosity and paranoia grow as he continues witnessing strange events, which his teenage neighbor further incites while encouraging him to take action.

As Brendan tries to ignore Dean's odd behaviors, he realizes his neighbor is not only watching him but taunting him. This sets off a deadly cat-and-mouse game with the author, culminating in the fact that nothing is as it appears. The more Brendan tries to ignore the unusual incidents at Dean's house, the more Dean antagonizes him. As the stakes increase, Brendan Peters begins to question everything about his shadowy neighbor:

What is Dean doing in the basement at night? Why and for how long has Dean been watching him? What are Dean's motives for toying with Brendan?
