International bestselling author Jeffery Deaver delivers surprise after alarming surprise in an ingenious story about a serial killer, a detective, and a twisting duel of wits.

A serial killer is trolling a midwestern suburb. His tools: a hammer, a screwdriver, floral wire, a kitchen knife and, to complete his errand, a Russian nesting doll left behind as a calling card. From one grisly crime scene to the next, Detective Ernest Neville and his Russian Doll Killer task force follow. With few leads and his career on the line, Neville is driven to desperate measures to get to the core of this diabolical puzzle. Layer by layer, he’s getting closer to the final piece. Yet the only thing that’s certain in this game is the unexpected, and as citizens are targeted by one of the most reprehensible characters the idyllic town has ever seen, Neville can only wonder if his efforts will end in disaster - for himself, for his family and for the people he’s sworn to protect.

*very minor spoilers* Micheal, dubbed the RDK (Russian Doll Killer) is a serial murder (or is he?) who's hunting women and being heavily pursued by the police. For kicks he goes out on blind dates, finds a flaw within the woman, and then upsets them. He hates journalists, both online and the fading paper industry due to the fact that most advertise sensationalistic views (i.e. interviewing kids with murdered parents or parents with recently murdered kids) to scare people, gain readers, and then collect on the ads their newspapers releases. He commandeers taxi cabs from shop-acholics. He berates a homeless veteran in horribly spectacular fashion by asking questions that most people wouldn't ask because they're not socially appropriate, but technically not illegal to ask. He's old fashioned; he makes you doubt yourself and your choices. And says just as much. Oh, and there's this: he's a serial killer. I found the short story quite entertaining, but it was definitely just a filler of time. I didn't learn anything or feel akin to him (thankfully), but his boorish mannerisms, candor, and charm (yes, charming and unassuming) made me laugh. May you, male or female, never meet him. He'd likely hurt your feelings.

An old fashioned serial killer

An absorbing story as well narrated as it was written. Thank you, gentlemen. Please may we have some more?

This story is typical Deaver. It is a police procedural with a twist or two. Entertaining to listen to while walking the dog.

Good story

This was a great short story, well written about a detective chasing a serial killer. We follow the sarcastic protagonist on his hunt. Since this is a Jeffrey Deaver tale, things will be turned on its ear. He is a master of the unforeseen plot twist and I didn't see this one coming. Those are the best kind. Very entertaining and the narrator was fantastic.
